Nash Black "Troubadour" (Jamestown, KY) - See all my reviews

DEAD ON by Robert W. Walker is a horror/thriller supreme when Marcus Rydell, PI & Dr. Kat Mallory plot revenge on the psychotic killer, Iden Cantu who has destroyed their lives.

Rydell suffers from blackout spells that can not be explained, when the chips were down he went down while his partner, Stan Miersky and two other patrolmen are executed. Cantu instead of killing the helpless Rydell lets him live with the aftermath of his cop killing spree.

One of the dead officers was the young husband of Dr. Katrina "Kat" Mallory. Consumed with hatred for the vicious killer, Kat holds a gun point date with Rydell to illicit his aid in trapping Cantu so she can make his die a dreadful death.

The pace of this well crafted novel never slows and you will be reading to the end.
The fine production will be followed by a sequel DEAD END.

Just finished reading Dead On, July 6, 2009

By  Karl & Linda - See all my reviews

(Linda) I just had to stay up late last night and finish it. You know I only downloaded
it because it was free in pdf format and I had never tried the conversion and
upload to K2 process so I thought this would be a good one to try it with.
Before I had a chance to figure out where to send it off to have it converted I
thought I would just read a page or two. I made the mistake of downloading it
to my work computer because that is where I was when I thought of doing it and
found that every few minutes I pulled the file back up to just read a few more
pages. Talk about sucking you in with the first chapter! Well obviously this
wasn't going to work since my employer really doesn't pay me to sit there and
read books. So I dug up the instructions for sending it for conversion so that
I got it back in my email and could upload it to the K2. That worked fine after
I called Customer Support and they told me about the choices you are given at
the top left of the Home page to display All Items. So now I could read the
rest of the book on my Kindle and just goof off at home instead of getting
fired. I have to say that this book sure keeps your interest from chapter to
chapter. I would find myself reading a particularly "exciting" chapter and just
having to put it down because I just couldn't bear any more. Within less than 5
minutes I just had to pick it up again because I had to see what happened next.
I won't describe any more of my reaction because I don't want to spoil it for
anyone else but if you love a good thriller, I would certainly recommend this
book. Now I am trying to figure out how to get it to my husband's iPod Touch
because he has chosen to use the Kindle software on it instead of buying a
Kindle and he will love this book. Is there any way to do that? In the
meantime, I am off to the Amazon store to buy more of Rob's books.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This author has become a favorite of mine. This book is exciting, provocative, and quite entertaining. The author uses many incomplete sentences, but in this case--IT WORKS! Dead On is really "Dead On."

Dead On suspense with Moonlighting romance, June 22, 2009

Reviewed by Stephanie Boyd

Four years ago former Atlanta police officer Marcus Rydell was left alive and physically unharmed while his partner and two other cops were brutally slain. Since then Marcus has lost everything: his reputation, his family, and his desire to find justice. He is surviving as a PI but he no longer feels life is worth living. Until Kat Holley pulls him out of his funk by challenging him to help her destroy the former-Marine survivalist, Iden Cantu, who has evaded police since he killed her husband and the other two cops and left Marcus alive.

But nothing could prepare Marcus and Kat for the ultimate evil mad man who has decided to kill the families of the men he massacred on that day four years ago. Cantu is focused on causing Marcus the ultimate pain of making him suffer because he is helpless as everyone else is brutally murdered before Cantu finally comes for Marcus. Do Marcus and Kat stand a chance in outwitting Cantu to stay alive?

Dead On is and outstanding thriller, like all the other books I have read by Robert W. Walker. The story is fast paced and filled with suspense and terror as normal people try to find away to survive a mad man who has nothing to lose.

I loved Marcus and Kat; they are both determined, intelligent, and yet flawed in a way that makes them that much more appealing. As they get to know each other, they realize that they have misjudged one another and a romance begins to develop-right before the mad man finds them! The budding romance gives the couple a reason to not only defeat Cantu but also reason to survive. But can they win and live with the actions they may be forced to take to stay alive?

If you have never read a book by this author, do yourself a favor, read this book and get swept away in this story of terrifying suspense, romance, a quest for justice and to stop the ultimate evil mad man, and an ultimate test of moral convictions!

Armchair Interviews says: A 5-star read from this very prolific writer known for his and horror and suspense stories.

A synopsis of this book has been written several times, so just let me say that it was suspenseful, entertaining, and hard to put down. The characters were fun and interesting and I'd like to see them again. I'm hoping for a sequel!

Dead On
A Marcus Rydell, Kat Holley Pi Thriller

by Robert W. Walker

Private investigator and former Atlanta cop Marcus Rydell is fighting with depression and seriously contemplating suicide when a disturbance at his apartment building interrupts his thinking. Hearing the cries of a child in distress, Marcus’ conditioned response sends him to the rescue. Another resident of the building, Dr. Kat Holly, shows up as well, to see if she can help. The situation is brought under control and the authorities are alerted to take charge of the scene.

Kat seems to know an awful lot about Marcus considering that this is their first meeting. They agree to meet again in order to get to know one another better and the meeting is anything but pleasant for Marcus Rydell.

At first Kat threatens Marcus with a revolver promising to kill him. The ensuing conversation reveals that Kat’s husband had been an Atlanta cop killed in the line of duty while responding to a call along with Marcus. Marcus claimed to have blacked out during the shootout and lay unconscious on the sidewalk while the killer finished off his partners. The implication was that Marcus was a coward who had played possum instead of backing up his fellow officers. Marcus argued that his periodic blackouts were real, although unexplained.

Kat reveals that the killer, a monster of a mountain man and former Marine, has returned to the area after four years of hiding and plans to finish what he started by killing all of the relatives of the cops who had tried to arrest him. He would save Marcus Rydell for his grand finale.

Iden Cantu, the killer, appears to know every move that Kat and Marcus make. And when one of the killer’s stated targets is found murdered in a grisly manner and hung up like a hunting trophy, Marcus knows that the game has begun.

Marcus and Kat gather the remaining targets of Cantu’s revenge and they all hide out at Marcus’ parents hideaway, a remote cabin on a small lake in the deep woods. But Cantu’s research has been thorough and he is there waiting for them.

Author Robert Walker does an incredible job of making Iden Cantu one of the scariest characters I’ve ever encountered in a mystery novel. Every time he appears he gives me goose-bumps. Walker is known for writing dark stories and this one definitely doesn’t disappoint. The quick and terse dialog keep the story moving at a surprisingly rapid pace and the characters all have faces. Another winner for Walker.

Full report

DEAD ON by Robert W. Walker is a chiller thriller of the first magnitude. Rob takes the reader's capacity for the imagination of horror to stomach turning depths, and then gives it more twists than a Georgia backroad that paves an Indian trail. This new addition to his broad range of titles will keep you awake long after the last page is closed.
I've reviewed several titles on this blog that were heralded as thrillers, but none of them had the spine tingling power of DEAD ON.

From the first page when former Atlanta police detective turned PI, Marcus Rydell is contemplating ending his life through his gun point first date with Dr. Kat Holley the tension and suspense builds as they bind together to catch a psychotic killer who has destroyed their lives and halted their careers.

The reader is compelled to keep turning the pages. Rob does little pseudo psychological musing as to what has turned ex-marine, professional hunter Iden Cantu into a monster killer. He illustrates by the deviants' blood curdling actions how a man slips over the line into insanity.

Cantu thrives on torture, both physical and mental for his victims. Cantu picks Rydell as his adversary when Rydell experiences a blackout as his partner and two other policemen are executed over his prone body. It is a duel manhunt of Cantu's choosing unless he can destroy Rydell from inside his own brain before Rydell finds him.

Nothing is predictable in this fast paced horror/thriller and the descriptions are sparse as each character controls their own destiny, which are fought against an unpredictable opponent.
This reviewer will be back for the sequel DEAD END, because there are many questions left unanswered.
